How to Pray for Deliverance from Addictive Behaviors

4 minute read A Walk Faithful guide

In this guide

Deliverance in Scripture is real, and it is more often described as being brought up out of something over time than as waking up changed. The psalm most associated with rescue begins with waiting, then being lifted out, then being given somewhere solid to stand.

That shape matters for what you pray. Asking for the craving to be removed is reasonable. Asking for what you need to walk out — help, honesty, a way of escape, people — is the request Scripture more consistently shows being answered.

What does the rescue actually look like?

I waited patiently for Yahweh. He turned to me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.
Psalm 40:1-2 (WEB)

Four movements: waiting, being heard, being brought up, being given footing. Notice that the rescue ends with a stable place to stand rather than with the pit being explained or the waiting being skipped.

If you have prayed for years and are still fighting, this psalm is not evidence against you. It opens with the waiting.

What to actually pray for

The way of escape, in the specific moment.

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13 (WEB)

The promise is not the absence of temptation but an exit inside it. Praying for that in advance — before the evening, before the trip, before the empty house — is different from praying after.

Honesty, before relief. Most people in this situation have been praying for the behaviour to stop while concealing how bad it is. Ask for the willingness to tell someone the true version. That prayer tends to get answered quickly and is usually the turning point.

Willingness to accept ordinary help. Frequently the answer arrives as a treatment programme, a counsellor, a meeting, or a medication rather than as a feeling. Praying for deliverance while refusing the means is a common and painful loop.

Endurance for a long fight. Not resignation. Most people who get free describe years with relapses inside them.

The verse that changes the odds

Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.
James 5:16 (WEB)

Confession and healing are placed in the same sentence, and the confession is horizontal — to one another. This is the single most consistently underused instruction in Scripture on this subject.

Addiction runs on secrecy. The behaviour survives because nobody knows the frequency, the amount, or the cost. One person who knows the real numbers and is allowed to ask changes the situation more than any amount of private resolve.

Say this plainly: get treatment

Praying is not an alternative to treatment, and treating it as one has cost people years and sometimes their lives.

Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can be medically dangerous and sometimes fatal — do not stop abruptly on your own; see a doctor. Opioid use disorder has medications with strong evidence behind them. Gambling, pornography, and compulsive behaviours have specific therapeutic approaches that work considerably better than willpower.

In the US, SAMHSA’s National Helpline is 1-800-662-4357, free, confidential, 24 hours. If there is any thought of harming yourself, call or text 988.

None of that is a failure of faith. It is what the way of escape frequently looks like in practice.

What Paul says about the struggle itself

For I don’t know what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do.
Romans 7:15 (WEB)

That is in the Bible, written by the apostle. Whatever your struggle proves, it does not prove you are uniquely broken or outside the faith.

And the answer given to Paul about his own unremoved affliction is worth holding on a bad week.

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
2 Corinthians 12:9 (WEB)

A prayer you can actually use

Short, honest, and free of bargaining:

God, I cannot stop this on my own and I have proved that. Give me the honesty to tell one person the true version today. Show me the way out when it comes, and give me the willingness to take it. Bring me up out of this, however long it takes, and give me somewhere solid to stand. Amen.

Today, not eventually

Tell one person the real version. Make the appointment or the call. Pray the psalm rather than performing a resolution.

The psalmist waited, and then was brought up, and then was given a rock to stand on. All three are part of the rescue — including the first one you are probably in right now.
