10 Bible Heroes Who Wrestled with Serious Doubt

7 minute read A Walk Faithful guide

In this guide

Scripture’s most trusted names doubted out loud, and God kept every one of them. Abraham laughed at the promise he is now famous for believing. Elijah asked to die days after the greatest public victory of his career. Thomas said he would not take the resurrection on anyone’s word. Ten of them are below, with the doubt each one actually voiced. The pattern in Scripture is not that faithful people avoid doubt. It is that they take the doubt straight to God instead of carrying it somewhere else.

Who doubted God in the Old Testament?

1. Abraham laughed at the promise

Hebrews holds him up as the model of faith. Genesis shows what that faith looked like from the inside.

Then Abraham fell on his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, “Will a child be born to him who is one hundred years old? Will Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth?”
Genesis 17:17 (WEB)

He was face down on the ground in worship and doing the arithmetic at the same time, and the arithmetic said no. Both things were true in the same body. Twenty-five years of waiting will do that to a man.

2. Sarah laughed, then denied it

She overheard the promise from the tent door and laughed at her own worn-out body. Caught out, she said she had not laughed, because she was afraid (Genesis 18:12-15). Scripture records the denial as carefully as the laugh, and then records that she conceived anyway. Being frightened enough to lie about your doubt did not disqualify her.

3. Moses said the rescue had made everything worse

After the first audience with Pharaoh the workload doubled and the Hebrew foremen turned on him. Moses went back to God and asked, without softening it, why God had brought trouble on the people and why he had been sent at all (Exodus 5:22). He had already seen a bush burn without being consumed. Evidence does not settle doubt as permanently as we would like it to.

4. Gideon asked where all the miracles had gone

An angel opened with a greeting about a mighty man of valor. Gideon answered by cross-examining the entire national story.

Gideon said to him, “Oh, my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, ‘Didn’t Yahweh bring us up from Egypt?’ But now Yahweh has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.”
Judges 6:13 (WEB)

Then he asked for the sign with the fleece. Then he asked for it again, reversed, to rule out coincidence. God gave him both without a word of rebuke.

5. Job stopped defending God’s fairness

Job never renounces God, which is what his wife tells him to do and what the accuser predicted. He does something less tidy. He argues. He wants a hearing, a courtroom, an address where papers could be served, and in Job 23 he searches north, south, east, and west and finds nobody home. When God finally answers out of the whirlwind, the answer explains nothing about the suffering. It simply arrives. That was enough for Job. Scripture does not claim it lands the same way for everyone, and neither should we.

6. David asked how long God intended to forget him

How long, Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
Psalm 13:1 (WEB)

This is in the hymnbook. Israel sang it together, out loud, in worship. Whatever else the Psalms are, they are evidence that God’s people were permitted to set the accusation of divine absence to music and perform it in public.

7. Elijah asked God to kill him

But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, “It is enough. Now, O Yahweh, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.”
1 Kings 19:4 (WEB)

He had called down fire on Mount Carmel. One death threat later he was alone in the desert wanting to be dead. God’s response was not a lecture on gratitude. It was sleep, food, more sleep, more food, and only then a conversation. If you are where Elijah was, treat it as urgent: in the US call or text 988, and tell a doctor. An angel brought bread before God brought a word. The body was handled first.

8. Habakkuk accused God of refusing to listen

The book opens with a prophet who has been shouting about violence and getting silence back (Habakkuk 1:2). God’s eventual answer is harder to bear than the silence was, because the answer is Babylon. So the prophet argues again. He ends up choosing to trust while the fig tree stays bare and the stalls stay empty. Nothing in his circumstances improved. His posture did.

Who doubted in the New Testament?

9. John the Baptist asked whether he had backed the wrong man

He had baptized Jesus. He had heard the voice from heaven and seen the dove. Then he sat in Herod’s prison while the Messiah he announced overthrew nobody, and he sent his own disciples to ask the question directly.

and said to him, “Are you he who comes, or should we look for another?”
Matthew 11:3 (WEB)

Jesus did not scold him. He sent back a report of what was happening on the ground: blind people seeing, lame people walking, poor people hearing good news. Then he turned to the crowd and said no one greater had been born of women. The question cost John nothing in Christ’s estimation of him.

10. Thomas refused to take anyone’s word for it

The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
John 20:25 (WEB)

He carries a nickname for this that the other ten escaped, though they had not believed the women either until they saw for themselves. A week later Jesus walked through a locked door and offered him his hands. Thomas asked for evidence and was given evidence, along with a blessing spoken over everyone who would never get that option.

Is doubting God a sin?

Scripture uses one English word for two different things. There is doubt that keeps talking to God, which is what every person above was doing, and there is settled refusal, the hardened heart Hebrews warns about. James says a double-minded man should not expect to receive, but his subject is someone asking for wisdom while hedging his bets, not someone in genuine pain. Honest Christians disagree about exactly where that line sits. What is not in dispute is that God fielded every complaint on this list without withdrawing a single calling.

What actually helps when you are the one doubting?

Say it to God in the words you would really use. The father in Mark 9 asked Jesus to help his unbelief and got the healing anyway. Edited prayer is not more spiritual than honest prayer. It is just quieter.

Then check the ordinary things before you check your theology. Elijah’s collapse was partly physiological, and so are a great many faith crises. Doubt that shows up alongside insomnia, appetite loss, or hopelessness may be depression wearing a theological costume, and the right first call is a doctor or a counselor. Prayer is not a substitute for treatment. Treating your body has never been a failure of faith. If you are thinking about ending your life, in the US call or text 988 now.

Find one person who will not flinch. Most doubt does its worst damage in secrecy, where it grows unopposed and picks up shame as it goes. A pastor, a mature friend, a counselor: someone who can hear the whole sentence without needing to fix it in the next breath.

And give it time. Abraham waited twenty-five years. Job got no explanation. John died in prison without seeing the kingdom he announced. None of them were told to stop asking. They were simply kept.
