Pray out loud tonight, at the table, with the letters still lying on it. The prayer directly below is yours to use word for word. Then in the morning, call your loan servicer and ask for the loss mitigation department, and call a HUD-approved housing counselor at 800-569-4287, which is free. God has never treated prayer and phone calls as rivals.
What do we pray tonight?
Use it if you have no words left. Change any of it. Pray it together if you can, separately if you cannot yet.
God, You know the exact number on the letter. We cannot say it out loud without our voices shaking. We are afraid of losing this house, and we are more afraid of what losing it seems to say about us. Provide, if You will provide. Open a door with the servicer. Send work, a buyer, a modification, mercy from someone who has the power to give it. And if this house goes, go with us. Keep us from turning on each other in the hallway at midnight. Keep our children from remembering this year as the year their parents stopped speaking. Give us today what today needs. You had nowhere to lay Your head and You were not abandoned. Do not let us believe that we are. Amen.
Jesus said to him, βThe foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.β
Luke 9:58 (WEB)
That is not a consolation prize. The Lord you are praying to has been housing insecure Himself, and never took it as evidence that His Father had failed Him.
Will God save our house if we pray hard enough?
He may. He does not promise to. There is no verse anywhere in Scripture guaranteeing that a faithful family keeps a particular address, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Israel prayed and still went into exile. Naomi went out full and came home empty. The believers in Hebrews lost their possessions outright, and the letter praises them for how they took it rather than for getting the property back.
For you both had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your possessions, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and an enduring one in the heavens.
Hebrews 10:34 (WEB)
Pray boldly for the house. Ask specifically, and keep asking. Just do not stake your belief in God’s goodness on one outcome, or you will lose your faith and your home in the same week, and you only have to lose one.
Is this our fault?
Sometimes, partly. Most foreclosures follow a layoff, a hospital bill, a divorce, a rate reset, a business that dried up. Some follow decisions a family would make differently now. If yours is the second kind, say so honestly to God and to each other, once, and then stop. Confession is a door you walk through. Shame is a room you move into.
If debt was the trap, name it as a trap rather than a moral verdict on you.
The rich rule over the poor. The borrower is servant to the lender.
Proverbs 22:7 (WEB)
Scripture is describing a power imbalance, not calling you a failure. You are servant to the lender right now. That is a situation, and situations end.
What should we actually do this week?
Prayer and paperwork are the same act of faith in this season. Do both before Friday.
- Open every unopened envelope. The dates inside control your options, and the worst outcomes come to families who stopped reading the mail.
- Call your servicer and ask what loss mitigation options exist for your loan: forbearance, a repayment plan, a modification, a partial claim. Ask for it in writing, and note who you spoke to.
- Call the HUD-approved counseling line, 800-569-4287. It is free, and a counselor who does this daily will know what your servicer is required to offer.
- Never pay an upfront fee to a company promising to stop your foreclosure. Rescue scams find families at exactly this stage. Real help does not cost money you do not have.
- Find out whether your state uses a judicial or nonjudicial process. The timelines differ by months, and your local legal aid office can tell you in one call.
- If the house is likely going regardless, ask about a short sale or a deed in lieu. They land differently than a completed foreclosure, and you keep more control over the exit.
How do we tell the children?
Tell them something true and short. We may move. We will be together. This is not your fault, and it is not your job to fix. Children take in tone before facts, so the calm matters more than the wording.
Do not ask them to keep it secret from grandparents or teachers. Secrecy teaches a child that the family is disgraced, which is the one lesson you cannot afford them to learn from this. Let them see you make the phone calls. A child who watches a parent do hard things badly learns more than one protected from all of it.
What if one of us cannot get out of bed?
Foreclosure does real damage to a person’s mind, not just to a credit file. Losing a home is associated with serious depression, and the shame of it makes people hide when they most need to be seen. If you are sleeping all day, drinking more than you used to, or unable to make a single call, that is a medical situation and not a spiritual failure. See a doctor. Ask for a counselor. Prayer belongs alongside treatment and cannot replace it.
If either of you has thought your family would be better off with the insurance money, or has thought about not being here at all, call or text 988 today, in the United States, before you finish reading this. Your family needs you far more than they need this house. That is not a sentiment. That is the actual math.
Financial stress also raises the temperature in a house that was already unsafe. If someone is being hurt or threatened, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233.
Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
Psalm 34:18 (WEB)
Who do we let help us?
This is where most Christian families lose ground. They pray privately, tell nobody, and go under quietly while a hundred people in their church would have moved money or a truck or a spare room without blinking.
Bear one anotherβs burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2 (WEB)
Someone has to name the burden before anyone can carry it. Vague requests get vague prayer. Tell two people the real number and the real date, and ask for one specific thing: a lead on work, help moving boxes on a Saturday, groceries for three weeks. People say yes to specifics far more often than to a feeling.
If you are the friend reading this because someone you love is in it, do not send a verse. Send a check, a meal, or your truck.
What do we pray if the house goes?
God, we lost it. We are grieving a kitchen, a driveway, a room we painted twice. Do not let bitterness take root in our marriage or in our children. Give us a place to sleep, work that pays, and neighbors we did not choose. Teach us to hold the next address more loosely without loving it less. You said You would never leave us, and we are holding You to that. Amen.
Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, βI will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you.β
Hebrews 13:5 (WEB)
The promise there is not that the house stays. It is that He stays. Those are different sentences, and only one of them was ever guaranteed to you.
Make the calls in the morning. Pray tonight. Both of those are faith, and your family can tell the difference between a parent who is praying and a parent who has given up, even when the outcome is the same.
