A Prayer of Praise and Worship

Most of our prayers are asking prayers. We come to God with lists — fix this, help with that, provide for this, heal that. And God welcomes every one of those requests. But there’s another kind of prayer that does something different to your soul: the prayer that asks for nothing and simply worships.

Praise shifts your attention from what you need to who God is. It doesn’t ignore your circumstances — it puts them in proper perspective. When you spend time simply telling God how good he is, how faithful he’s been, how vast and beautiful and worthy he is, something happens inside you. The anxiety quiets. The perspective widens. The God who felt distant starts to feel close again.

This prayer is designed for that. No requests. No agenda. Just worship. Read it slowly. Let the words become your own.

A Prayer of Praise and Worship

Father,

I come to you right now not to ask for anything, but simply to tell you who you are. I spend so much time bringing you my problems — and you welcome that — but today I want to bring you something different. I want to bring you praise.

You are the God who made everything. The mountains, the oceans, the stars that I can’t count, the cells in my body that I can’t see — all of it spoke into existence by your voice. You didn’t need any of it. You created it because creativity and generosity are part of your nature. The world exists because you wanted it to. I exist because you wanted me to.

You are holy. Not just good — holy. Set apart. Beyond comparison. There is nothing in the universe that rivals you, nothing that comes close. Every attempt to describe you falls short, and that’s not a failure of language — it’s a testament to how far beyond language you actually are.

You are faithful. I look back on my life and I see your fingerprints on everything — the doors you opened, the ones you closed, the moments you carried me when I didn’t have the strength to walk. You didn’t abandon me when I walked away from you. You didn’t give up on me when I gave up on myself. Your faithfulness outlasted my unfaithfulness, and I’m standing here today because of that.

You are merciful. You know every failure, every secret, every moment I’d be ashamed for anyone else to see — and you chose to love me anyway. Not reluctantly. Not with conditions. Freely, fully, completely. The cross is the proof. You didn’t wait until I cleaned up my life to come for me. You came while I was still a mess, and you called me yours.

You are sovereign. Nothing surprises you. Nothing is out of your control. The things that terrify me are not terrifying to you. You sit above the chaos, not anxiously but peacefully, working all things — even the painful things — toward a good end that I can’t see yet but you’ve already planned.

You are present. Right here. Right now. Not watching from a distance, but closer than my own breath. You hear this prayer before I finish speaking it. You know the gratitude in my heart before I find the words for it. You are not a God who is far away. You are Emmanuel — God with us.

I worship you. Not because I have to, but because when I see you clearly, worship is the only response that makes sense. You are worthy — of more praise than I could give in a thousand lifetimes. So I’ll start here. I’ll start now.

All glory to you, Father. All honor. All praise. Forever.

Amen.

Verses to Worship With

Psalm 145:3

“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.”

The word “fathom” means to reach the bottom of. No one can reach the bottom of God’s greatness. You will never run out of reasons to praise him. Every time you think you’ve exhausted his goodness, there’s more underneath.

Revelation 4:11

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

This is the worship happening in heaven right now — around the throne, continually, without ceasing. When you worship here on earth, you’re joining a chorus that never stops. You’re participating in the primary activity of eternity.

Psalm 63:3-4

“Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.”

David made a stunning claim: God’s love is better than life itself. Not better than a bad day — better than life. When you believe that, praise becomes effortless. It’s the natural overflow of a heart that has tasted something better than anything the world can offer.

Isaiah 6:3

“And they were calling to one another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.’”

The seraphim — angels who stand in God’s direct presence — can’t stop saying it. Holy, holy, holy. Three times, for emphasis. The repetition tells you something: God’s holiness is not a side attribute. It’s the defining characteristic. Everything else about him flows from this.

Three Ways to Make Worship a Daily Practice

1. Start your morning with praise before requests

Before you bring God your to-do list, spend two minutes simply telling him who he is. It reorients your entire day. You move from “I need” to “you are” — and from that posture, everything else falls into place differently.

2. Keep a praise list alongside your prayer list

Most people have a list of things they’re asking God for. Start a parallel list of things you’re thanking him for. Review it regularly. Over time, you’ll notice that your praise list grows faster than your prayer list — and that changes how you see your life.

3. Worship through music, even when you don’t feel like it

Put on a worship song in the car, in the kitchen, in the quiet of your living room. Let the lyrics do the work when your own words run out. Music has a way of bypassing the analytical mind and going straight to the heart. Some of the most powerful worship moments happen when you start singing before you feel like it.

A Final Thought

Worship is not something you do for God because he’s insecure and needs the affirmation. God doesn’t need your praise. You need to give it. Worship puts your soul back in its right position — small creature before an infinite Creator. And in that position, paradoxically, you find the deepest rest, the clearest vision, and the most unshakeable peace.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I be grateful when life is hard?

Gratitude in suffering isn’t about denying pain — it’s about choosing to also see God’s presence. Look for small mercies: a friend’s call, sunshine, breath in your lungs.

Does gratitude really change your brain?

Yes. Neuroscience shows that regular gratitude practice increases dopamine and serotonin, reduces cortisol, and physically changes neural pathways. God designed gratitude to heal.

What if I don’t feel grateful?

Start anyway. Gratitude is a practice before it’s a feeling. Thank God for three things right now — even simple ones. Feelings often follow actions.
