Bible Verses for Growing in Faith

Faith isn’t static. It’s not something you receive once and then carry unchanged for the rest of your life. Faith is alive — it grows, deepens, gets tested, and strengthens. Like a muscle, it develops through use. Like a plant, it needs consistent nourishment. Like a relationship, it matures through time, honesty, and sometimes difficulty.

If your faith feels small right now, that’s okay. Jesus said faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. The question isn’t how big your faith is today — it’s whether you’re willing to let it grow.

These 15 verses cover three dimensions of spiritual growth: the foundation of faith, the process of growing, and the fruit that mature faith produces.

The Foundation: What Faith Is

Before faith can grow, it helps to understand what you’re growing. These verses define faith and establish its starting point.

1. Hebrews 11:1

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

This is the Bible’s definition of faith. Not wishful thinking. Not blind belief. Confidence and assurance — based on the character of God, the testimony of Scripture, and the witness of generations of believers who have trusted him and found him faithful. Faith is standing on something solid even when you can’t see the ground.

2. Romans 10:17

“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”

Faith has a source: the Word of God. If you want your faith to grow, immerse yourself in Scripture. Faith doesn’t grow in a vacuum — it grows in response to God’s truth. The more you hear, read, and absorb the message of Christ, the stronger your faith becomes.

3. Matthew 17:20

“He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’”

A mustard seed is one of the smallest seeds in existence. Jesus didn’t say you need enormous faith to do extraordinary things. He said you need real faith — even a tiny amount of genuine trust in a big God. Don’t despise the smallness of your faith. Despise the smallness of your view of God.

4. Ephesians 2:8-9

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Even the faith you have is a gift. You didn’t generate it through effort or intelligence. God gave it to you. That means the pressure is off. Your job is not to manufacture faith from nothing — it’s to steward and cultivate the faith that God has already planted in you.

5. Mark 9:24

“Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, ‘I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!’”

This might be the most honest prayer in the entire Bible. “I believe, but I also struggle to believe.” If that describes you, you’re in good company. Growing in faith doesn’t mean never doubting. It means bringing your doubt to God instead of letting it drive you away from him. He can work with honest struggle.

The Process: How Faith Grows

Faith growth is not automatic. It involves intentional practices and, often, uncomfortable circumstances.

6. James 1:2-4

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of various kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

The primary way faith grows is through testing. Not punishment — testing. Like steel refined by fire, your faith becomes stronger when it’s put under pressure. The trials you’re facing right now might be the exact conditions God is using to grow a faith that can handle what’s coming next.

7. 2 Peter 1:5-7

“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.”

Peter describes faith growth as a building process — each quality stacking on the one before it. Faith is the foundation, but it’s not the whole building. God wants to add goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love to your faith. Growth is intentional, progressive, and lifelong.

8. Philippians 1:6

“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

God started something in you, and he’s going to finish it. Your spiritual growth is not dependent on your willpower alone — God himself is committed to the process. On the days when growth feels slow or impossible, remember: the God who began the work is the same God who will complete it. He’s not giving up on you.

9. Hebrews 12:1-2

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”

Faith is a race — not a sprint, but a long-distance run. It requires throwing off what hinders you, persevering through fatigue, and keeping your eyes fixed on Jesus. He’s not just the object of your faith. He’s the pioneer and perfecter of it. He authored your faith, and he’ll finish writing the story.

10. Colossians 2:6-7

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”

The language here is agricultural and architectural — rooted and built up. Trees with deep roots survive storms that uproot shallow ones. Buildings with strong foundations withstand earthquakes that level weak ones. Growing in faith means going deeper, not just wider. It means developing roots that anchor you when everything above ground is shaking.

The Fruit: What Mature Faith Looks Like

As faith grows, it produces visible results. These verses describe the fruit of a faith that has been cultivated and tested.

11. Galatians 5:22-23

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Mature faith doesn’t just believe the right things — it produces a changed life. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. These are the evidence of a faith that is growing. If these qualities are increasing in your life, your faith is deepening, even on the days when it doesn’t feel like it.

12. Romans 5:3-5

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

The chain here is remarkable: suffering leads to perseverance, which builds character, which produces hope. And the hope isn’t wishful thinking — it’s anchored by God’s love poured into your heart. Suffering is not the enemy of faith growth. It’s one of its most reliable catalysts.

13. Isaiah 40:31

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

Growing in faith doesn’t mean you’ll never be tired. It means your strength will be renewed. Notice the progression: soar, run, walk. Sometimes faith looks like soaring above circumstances. Sometimes it looks like running through them. And sometimes — maybe most often — it looks like simply walking and not giving up. All three are victories.

14. 1 Corinthians 16:13

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.”

Paul’s closing charge to the Corinthians reads like a battle cry. Stand firm. Be courageous. Be strong. Mature faith isn’t passive — it’s active, alert, and willing to hold its ground. The world will push against your faith. Growing means developing the strength to stand when the pressure comes.

15. 2 Corinthians 5:7

“For we live by faith, not by sight.”

This is the ultimate description of the Christian life. You walk forward based on what God has said, not on what you can see. Growing in faith means becoming increasingly comfortable with not having all the answers, not seeing the full picture, and trusting the God who does. It’s not easy. But it’s the most alive way to live.

A Prayer for Growing Faith

Lord, grow my faith. I don’t want to stay where I am spiritually. I want deeper roots, stronger convictions, and a trust in you that doesn’t waver when life gets hard. Use whatever you need to — trials, Scripture, community, even my own weakness — to build in me a faith that honors you. I believe. Help me overcome my unbelief. And don’t stop working in me until the work is complete. In Jesus’ name, amen.
